WOMEN SHOULD BE GIVEN OPPORTUNITES TO SPREAD THEIR WINGS IN POLITICS

By: Rosaline Neging, Deputy Women Chief of PRS

Women's representation in Sarawak political scene is under represented (far from the 30 percent target set by the federal and state governments). In the state assembly, only 6 percent are women whereas for parliamentarians, women make only 16 per cent of the total number (statement by Datuk Nancy Shukri: extracted from The Borneo Post, 16/11/2016).

PRS should emulate PBB's stance in continuing the tradition of filling in women's candidates in their allocated seats. It is high time for PRS to fill a woman's candidate in the coming election.

Women in PRS should be given be opportunities to contest either in state assembly or parliamentarian election. Should they win the election, that should be the right avenue to spread their wings to show off their capabilities and to serve the community in general while working hand in hand with men.

Gender equality is a very much current subject that society should be aware of because this is one of the principles that we and our children will continue to live on. But why is it, when any related statements on this subject are released, they only invite negative responses instead of positive ones? Are our men not ready to share their seats with women, are they not confident of our capabilities or are they afraid of women being in the limelight? For whatever reasons, gender equality seems to be a sensitive subject for some men.

Given the right platform, women are competent in handling matters like domestical issues, reaching out to women, children and society in general. Men should be more willing to make way for women to prove themselves and be more welcoming to the idea of gender equality.

The key issues here are positive collaboration and teamwork instead of bashing one another could be the right combination in order to serve the society for the common good. Women's representation would create chances that will trigger positive impacts on our generation. One day when our children look back, they will reminisce on their role models who are both men and women.

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Women chief Dato’ Sri Doris Brodie reminded women entrepreneurs to upgrade their skills all the time in order to remain competitive and keep abreast with ever-evolving technology.

Doris who is also a political secretary to the Chief Minister said Dayak businesswomen, in particular, must not rely too much on quotas but stand up and be counted based on merits.

She was speaking at the Skills Upgrading programme organised by the Lubok Antu Women and Family Development Council held at the community hall of Simpang Nyemungan in Lubok Antu yesterday.

“Women, especially those residing in the rural areas, need to work harder and smarter as we are late starters not only in education but also in other avenues including entrepreneurship and politics,” she said.

“For women to move forward, we must have self-confidence and we too, must equip ourselves with knowledge and skills,” she added.

On politics, she asked the local community to stay united, work together, support each other and not waste time bickering on negativities.

Doris pointed out that during the last general election in 2013, she was assisting in whatever ways she could in Lubok Antu throughout the election period to make sure that the local Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate there won.

“And indeed YB Datuk William Nyallau Badak won handsomely then.

“That same conviction and spirit is still intense and upheld by me till this very day,” she said when clarifying some negative talk about her party.

“Therefore, if there are rumours and speculations going around, I can only say that it is the work of some people who have hidden agendas and whose only intention is to weaken BN support in Lubok Antu,” she stressed.

Doris said she hoped all BN members would rise above petty issues and instead stay focussed on working together and supporting one another especially people’s representatives so that the parliamentary constituency of Lubok Antu would excel further in the future.

Also speaking at the function was Lubok Antu Women and Family Development Council chairlady Jaynita Melai and community leaders Pemanca Jau and Penghulu Mering.

Among those present at the function were political secretary to the Chief Minister Angeline Umih Tujok, PRS Women deputy chief Rosaline Neging and Sri Aman Women and Family Development chairlady Annie Lai.

PRS women back CM’s motion to reinstate Sarawak’s 1963 status

KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Women’s wing supports Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s decision to table a comprehensive motion to reinstate Sarawak’s 1963 status during the upcoming State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.

In a press statement yesterday, the women’s wing described Adenan as brave in making a “no- nonsense move”.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, who is also PRS president, will table the motion.

“We say kudos to the initiative and call for all Sarawakians regardless of political divide to support the motion.

“It has been 53 years and it is long overdue; we should no longer let others enjoy our rights and unrightfully deprive us Sarawakians of what is rightly ours, being one of the regions that had formed Malaysia,” PRS Women said.

The group said it was a good move and wise thinking on the part of the state government to take a comprehensive approach towards the motion as the Territorial Sea Act, Continental Shelf Act, Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution and the Petroleum Development Act must be revisited and corrected to ensure that the state’s rights are reinstated, protected and not violated.

The women’s wing said it agreed with Adenan’s statement that, “all these Acts of Parliament have eroded Sarawak’s rights and have been taken over by Putrajaya”.

“We strongly feel that MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963) must be upheld and that all post-1963 amendments to the Federal Constitution on matters affecting the state are null and void if they were not first tabled, discussed and endorsed by the state assembly.

“In this instance, we are uncertain if such procedural processes were undertaken or had been positively concurred by the state then. If not, it is an unconstitutional act.”

The group also pointed out that emergency laws introduced in 1976 and related regulations were abolished by the federal government five years ago; therefore, the position of Sarawak must go back to its original form as per MA63.

“If it is not done, it is obviously an abuse of power by the federal government.”

The group added MA63 was meant to safeguard the autonomy and the special interests of the people of East Malaysia, protecting, among others, these regions’ rights on religion, language, education, administration, economy and culture and not otherwise.

“After 53 years since the formation of Malaysia, Sarawak, supposedly a region, is amongst the worst in form as compared to the other 12 states including Sabah,” said the statement.

“However, Sarawak in making this stance must not be misconstrued by any party; asking for what is duly ours and secession are two different things.”
